It remained in the museum until 1990 when it was stolen by thieves who cut it from its frame. As of 2020, the painting has an estimated value of $100 million. Early in the morning of March 18, 1990, two thieves disguised as police officers robbed the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum of thirteen works worth some $500 million. It was the greatest known property theft in history.
