Meet #WongSzeWai, a contemporary artist from Hong Kong whose works often explore the interplay between memory and imagination. She utilises forgotten memories, overlooked places, and old objects within the city as inspirations to form her distinctive, serene realm.
In her latest solo exhibition "Cabinet of Curiosities," Wong draws from this theme, referencing the collection practice emerged in 15th-century Europe, which laid the groundwork for modern museums. However, her interpretation of "Cabinet of Curiosities" diverges from the traditional; instead of showcasing renowned artworks or cultural artefacts, she presents the audience with forgotten yet meaningful everyday items, imagery, and neglected areas of the city.
Interestingly, this exhibition prompted Wong to recognise shifts in both the visual and thematic elements of her work, perhaps mirroring changes in her mentality and the progression of her artistic journey.
