The recent Sotheby's London Modern and Contemporary Evening Auction saw a historic moment, as Gustav Klimt's Dame mit Fächer (Lady with a Fan) sold for an unprecedented £74 million ($94.3 million), making it the highest-priced painting ever to be sold at auction in Europe. The auction garnered a total of £85.3 million ($108 million), including fees, surpassing the former record held by Alberto Giacometti's Walking Man I, which sold for $104.3 million at Sotheby's London in 2010.
While Lady with a Fan may not be as well-known as Klimt's other famous works, such as The Kiss (1907–08) or Portrait of Adele Bloch-Bauer I (1907), it is considered a masterpiece that displays the artist's spontaneity and formal prowess. Interestingly, the painting was still on an easel in Klimt's studio when he passed away from a stroke in early 1918.
It's worth noting that the previous auction of Lady with a Fan occurred at Sotheby's New York in 1994, where it sold for $11.6 million, a fraction of its record-breaking price today. This sale is a testament to the enduring appeal of Klimt's work, and the continued demand for modern and contemporary art among collectors.
