UK-based artist #EdFairburn begins each creative project by searching for the perfect vintage map to transform. His focus can vary from topographical features to roads or cities — Fairburn incorporates all these elements into his artwork. Instead of battling against the canvas, he embraces its existing lines and markings, allowing them to shape his portraits. While some pieces involve drawing over the map’s details, his most captivating works allow the streets and waterways to guide the composition. His human figures align with the curves of winding roads and rivers, using them to direct their placement and the angles of their faces.
Fairburn also employs roadways and paths on the map as boundaries, filling the surrounding empty space with hatching and crosshatching. By adjusting the density of his etchings, he skilfully suggests light, shadow, and texture in his portraits. Topographical contours form the shadow of a nose, a highway outlines a brow line, and a body of water creates a separation between the face and its surroundings, emphasizing it against the vast blue. Up close, his work may appear as an abstract arrangement of lines, but stepping back reveals the true brilliance of his artistry.
